new ornaments!

I'm listing these on eBay! So take a look when you have time. I love the dimensions for these mini-paintings. You don't have to use them for Christmas or the holidays...they could easily be displayed all year as well. The round pieces are on Apple wood which I cut and sanded.

titled "Fireflies" created 2010

Some new work on eBay! I'll be adding more abstract art as I create it. Also, I have some folk wood carvings that are up as well. Thank you for taking a look.

I like to participate in some on-line challenges. This one was of a small vintage photograph which acted as our launching point.

This was a fun piece I created for Halloween. I used a photo as my base and added details with photoshop.

Previous work I've done...

This is a fun piece I did with several dolls for an "other worldly" idea I had. You can view more of my digital artwork here.

I did the above for a competition with Pandora. If you check out my
abstract artwork on flickr (and the side bar), you can see more of what I do.

Now, that I've done a few local shows/selling at my Art Yard Sale, I thought I'd write about my experiences and thoughts. I haven't done an Art Festival show, yet. And I hope it will be more professional then the few small shows I have done, locally. Here's some of my reflections...

So, we decided to have our Art Yard Sale, again. I was reluctant as it was ultra windy and felt nervous for my work being out (and possible damage happening). Jon stayed out with everything, I watched over the kids.

As it turned out, was an all right day...though, we got some really annoying people. Some wanted to buy art for under $20. When they heard some of the pieces were not "cheap" they got all huffy and said, "That's too expensive". Sorry, lady. This isn't shipped en masse from China and you won't find these original art pieces in bulk.

It reminded me all too much of two shows I did, locally. The first one was were a woman was selling tons of Indian type sculptures for something like $2-5 and kept bad mouthing my work as well as other artists. She'd actually lure people over to buy stuff she bought in bulk. My friend and I were both shaking our heads and thought, what a jerk. She bad mouthed people selling their own handmade work and if anyone was interested, she'd complain about the price! I was like, what in the world is this? Honestly, if a person wants to buy bulk made stuff, that's their choice. But I wouldn't put down others that make their own handwork/crafts to sell. It's just wrong. And oddly, very un-American when you think about it.

I did another show and sold a few things. People were nice. However, it didn't help that it was a show with people who sold mass bulk items, again. For some reason, people who do this are very aggressive and not in a good way. Maybe I'm naive or something, but usually these people seem very loud, flashy and usually have a false friendliness about them. I honestly think nobody holds them accountable and they get away with being pushy. That's the problem. I notice in the world of bloggers and doing business on-line, you are very aware of being polite, courteous, and professional. The big difference, I think, is professionalism. If a person is being professional, it shows. You don't bash your fellow person or talk trash to tear people down. It makes the seller look trashy.

It all comes down to being honest and fair as well as being responsible. I do think supporting the local arts is very important and being aware of what we bring into our homes and lives, can make us better or worse.

Second Art Yard Sale

went really well! Sold several paintings and had more people stop by and look at my work. I need to make a sign (weather proofed) with my info, etc on it. So far, feeling inspired to create more work! Am thinking of making more and trying it on eBay (the bigger works). I haven't done that before (always worried about postage/shipping) but I think I may try it as I'm surprised at the way things are really picking up and moving.

Art Yard Sale!

If you're going to be in the neighborhood of 25th Ave in the 900 block in Altoona, why not stop by and see some art! Tomorrow, I'll be having a small exhibition of artwork ranging from Abstract to fun works with whimsy. If you'd like to go it will be from 8 am to 11 am. All art is sold directly from the artist!

This is the first time I've ever done an Art Yard Sale and am excited to see how it will go. Hopefully, the weather is calm and warm! If all goes well, I may try this wish me luck!

I'll have pics of how everything goes tomorrow! I'm excited!

Snowy Owl Quilt

Recently, I finished this quilt of a Snow Owl. It was a lot of fun to create...I designed the swirl fabric with stars and purple/blue shades and cut them out. I kept thinking of Eric Carle when I did the shapes. So much fun!

I'm thinking of a new quilt now, maybe with my beloved critters, guinea pigs or mice. We shall see. :)

More artwork to put up...

hopefully, tonight! I've got a few more cute works of art I'm planning to put up! I've started a new batch as well. Things are really going well now that we are back in a routine...I say this now, when the kids are off from school for an in-service day. I guess it's me, that's got into a good routine (doing 1-2 hours of art per day = a happy Emily). Little by little, as the saying goes.

On a side note, an energy saving light fell out of the socket and smashed in my basment. I aired it out for a few minutes. I'm sure it's from the kids running around on the 1st floor. However, could it have been a ghost? Some of my friends think I should go ahead and believe it was a ghost. I've suspected as much. Also, it was a miracle that Jon didn't step on it. He walked right by, turned to go back upstairs and thougt it was a smashed coffee cup. So, something was definitely guiding his footsteps. If it is a ghost, and I'm not saying it is, it must be a friendly one that watches out for us. :)

Of course, this made me reluctant to go into the basement to do some work. I'll probably go down there, anyway, and do some laundry. Plus, we have an exciting activity the kids will be doing this afternoon (homemade playdough) and I'll have time to do more sketching/art. :) More to come! :)

Happy New Year!

Thought I'd freshen up my website a bit. :) Hope you like the change...I was a bit reluctant to see the bunny and snowman go, but have to admit this looks pretty sweet. :)

I've been working up a storm...even while sick and tending to an active 1 yr old as well as family life (driving kids to school in snowy weather is a bit taxing on the nerves). I finished over 15 paintings which I will try to have up this week on eBay. I'd also like to start putting up work on etsy as well. Need to get things rolling for the new year! :)

Also, I found out I've been blogging for over 6 years at my blog,! I need to do some sort of a contest in honor of this. I think it's a rather good sign I've kept up my blog (even if a few pics got lost...before I knew about flickr). So, stay tuned for this.

All this "Staying inside because it's freezing outside" has given me more time to create new works of art. So, I should have a few things up about soon.
